Learn why and what to do about it

If you don't know me, I am Tiffiney Jahn. I am the CEO and Founder of Estrella Results Coaching, LLC. We offer an online coaching service where we help manufacturing plant managers think and feel better about their continuous improvement culture, and leverage it to create extraordinary results in their business, with intention.

We are unique because we focus on understanding and creating the mindset a learning organization needs to become a true learning organization able to adapt without expensive and time wasting interventions, which is necessary for 21st century success.

In this video, I teach you about a term called "buffering" that I teach to my clients. We then take their real work problems into our 20 minute sessions, and they get personalized, 1:1 coaching.

Buffering is what we do to avoid feeling a negative emotion, even if we know what we need to do is good for us.

I offer an approach to stop buffering to create the results you want in your life and in your business.

Buffering in Manufacturing

Buffering first happens in the mind, then leads to creating it in reality. It leads to increased manufacturing costs. For example, if planned maintenance turn around takes too long, you will buffer by:

  • Time. Promise longer delivery times.

  • Inventory. Build stock prior to the shutdown to cover the downtime.

  • Capacity. Keep extra (usually costly) equipment on hand to substitute for the lost capacity during the shutdown.

I'm not saying don't do any of these things, but how much you increase costs depends on how much you are willing to be uncomfortable. Most often, buffering is a habit to avoid the real work of reducing planned maintenance turn around downtime, or whatever the case may be.

And, unfortunately, this is an unconscious habit that is part of being human. Our brain naturally wants to avoid pain, minimize effort, and seek the easy way out because it's designed to protect us from potential threats. Therefore, we have to learn how to manage our minds so that we do the things that help us reach our goals, because most of the time the threat or risk we think we are avoiding doesn't exist or is minimal. At Estrella, this is what we help our clients do and what makes us unique as a business that supports manufacturers. Most of the time, you know what to do, but you don't do it because of your mindset. We help make the shifts required to help you deliver your performance goals.

We can give you the tactical steps to reduce costs associated with a problem like this. At Estrella, we also offer you the tactical step by step framework, but you won't do it, because your brain overrides your ability without you even knowing it. It will trick you into believing things, even though they don't serve your end goal. This is why coaching helps.

Like in the case of increased manufacturing costs due to planned maintenance downtime taking too long, the sneaky thought may be, we have to do everything to protect the customer. It sounds helpful, but it is not, because it keeps you from asking the right questions and taking actions that are compulsive rather than conscious.

Our brain must be guided to the solutions we seek. It's a conscious process, and it's a skill that we are not taught in school, but can be learned, and we use the best cutting edge method to do that.

Watch the video again and try the 3 steps, and notice how they keep you focused on delivering your business goals, like reducing manufacturing costs, even when your brain resists because of the risks.
